Animals in Winter

We continued learning about winter last week by focusing on what animals do in the winter. We learned that some animals adapt, some migrate, and some hibernate.

We did a science experiment to learn how some animals adapt and some get ready to hibernate by eating a lot to get nice and fat.  We each took a turn plunging our hands into ice water to represent how cold an animal would be in the winter if they didn't have fat to keep them warm.  Then, we each took a turn wearing a glove insulated with fat (crisco) and again plunged our hand into the ice water.  It was amazing to see that we couldn't feel any cold at all when our hand was insulated!

We learned a lot about hibernation, and made caves for our teddy bears to hibernate in,

and we played a Penguin Relay game where we had to waddle like a penguin with a ball between our legs after learning about Arctic animals.

On Friday, we had our Hibernation party, and, of course, came dressed for sleep in our pajamas.  It was fun to have our teddy bears at school with us and we each had a turn to introduce our special friend.

We finished our caves by decorating them with snow, then put our bears to sleep for the winter.

We walked like bears then crawled into our "cave" to hibernate.  We had fun listening to some fun bear books while we hibernated :)  When the room got very warm and the "sun" got bright, we woke up from hibernation and sniffed aroud the classroom for food as we were VERY hungry from not eating all winter!

This was definitely a day we'll remember!

Winter Theme

We kicked off 2012 with a fun Winter theme.

 We made pretzel stick snowmen,

made name snowmen,

colored and laced mittens,

played a game like "Hot Potato" with an ice cube to learn that warm hands melt cold ice,

went "ice fishing,"

learned how salt helps ice melt,

painted with ice cubes

and played a math number recognition/matching game.

Christmas Fun

We had a great time celebrating the Holidays in 4K!  There were so many fun things to do!  Here is a sample:

We decorated our cute little classroom Christmas tree,

wore the Rudolph nose when it was our turn to talk,

made Christmas/winter pictures with pattern blocks,

practiced letter recognition with a fun Santa game,

made ornament name necklaces,

made "Reindeer Chow"

and made delicious (and messy!) ice cream cone Christmas trees.

Gingerbread House Decorating Party

On December 14, each 4K student invited a "special helper" to help them decorate a gingerbread house.  We had a lot of fun spending time with our special helper and decorated some beautiful houses!  Before we started decorating, we had a few minutes to read with our helpers.

Then the real fun began!

Beautiful!!
