October 24, 2011

Today we started our Pumpkins theme.  This is such a fun one!

We played a game called, "Please Pass the Pumpkin" where the kids have to pass the paper pumpkin to each other using clothes pins, no hands!  This is a great way to strengthen the muscles in our hands that we use to color and write.

We made "pies" with Pumpin Pie playdough,

We started learning the fingerplay, "5 Little Pumpkins,"

and we read a non-fiction book about the life-cycle of pumpkins, using props to help us learn how pumpkins grow.

We practiced out cutting skills when we cut out a "seed packet" and paper pumpin seeds that we would use for a sequencing activity later on during stations,

we enjoyed exploring a new fall sensory tub.

and we learned about the sound the letter P makes and listed different words that begin with the same sound. We learned the tounge twister "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers," and practiced making P's with our long line and short curve.

During stations (when we have several activities set up around the room that kids rotate through), we
practiced writing numbers and putting events in the right order with Mrs. Tenpas,

we practiced writing P's and making small curves with Mrs. Greenfield,

we strengthened our fine-motor skills by tracing  "Pete" the turtle,

we sorted pumpkin buttons by their small. medium, or large size,

and we read books and worked on a scarecrow puzzle.

We didn't have time to finish our rotation, so we'll have to finish up on Wednesday.  We had a busy day today!

Today was a special day as we went on a hayride!  It was cold but sunny outside and we had a great time.  Mr. Stelsel also gave us a tour around his farm.  Thanks to Mr. Rick Stelsel for taking us and to the parents who came along.

Back at school we enjoyed our snack and had center time.
We drew on the easel,

saved the lives of sick babies,

practiced writing letters,

and learned to draw princesses.

All in all, it was a great day!

Today we continued learning about the leaves and the season of Fall.  We read the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and made leaf men and other creations of our own.

We each had a turn to explain our leaf creation to the rest of the class as well.

We sang a song about different fall-colred falling leaves,

and had a chance to explore nature up close using a magnifying glass.

Of course, we also had plenty of time to play. It's amazing what we learn by playing!

Today we continued our theme of Jobs People Do by talking about firefighters and all the things they do to help keep us safe.  We talked about fire safety and were paid a visit by the Alto firefighters!

We always start our day with a table activity.  Today we built with blocks.

We read a book about firefighters and fire safety, practiced
dialing 9-1-1 and stopping, dropping and rolling.

The firefighters came and taught us more about staying safe.  They
gave each of us a fire helmet and goodie bag.  They took
us outside and showed us the fire trucks, letting us
see the lights and hear the sirens!

(stop, drop, and roll)

After our company left, we made fire trucks.  It was a lot of work
to cut out all those squares, rectangles, and circles, but we were
happy with the final result!
