October 3, 2011

Today we started our "Farm" theme.  We started our study of the topic by brainstorming all we know about farms, creating a KWL chart. (K = what we already know about farms, W = what we would like to know about farms, and L = what we learned about farms - we'll fill this in on Friday.) This group of kids knows A LOT about farms!  Although I've lived in this area for over 10 years, I'm a born and bred Chicago girl, so believe me, these kids can teach me a lot :).   We read several Farm-themed books, both fiction and non-fiction throughout the day. Our favorite seemed to be  Farmer Brown Goes Round and Round

We played farm in the Block Center during Centers,

made a barn and farm scene out of blocks,

and learned through our play as we made cookies,

and played Hot Dots.

For our large group activity today, we played a game called "Graph It."
Each of the farm animals on the graph were also pictured on a spinner.  Each time
the spinner landed on a particular animal, a space was colored in above it on the graph.
We practiced using phrases/words like "the most," "the least," and "the same."  Ask your
child which animal "won!"

We also learned another hand symbol to use in conjunction with the ABC
book we sing together daily as a way to learn letters and their sounds.

Finally, on this beautiful day, we played on the playground!
